on the nightstand

To read:

Paul Auster's Invisible
I'm a Paul Auster fan; I loved his earlier works (mostly Leviathan and The New York Trilogy) and Brooklyn Follies, but couldn't get into Travels in the Scriptorium or Man in the Dark. Invisible has been on my to-read list since I read this review in the New York Times back in November with this endorsement (first sentence of the review): As soon as you finish “Invisible” you want to read it again.

Jane Gardam's The Man in the Wooden Hat
With the jaw-dropping success of The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Europa Editions books are being more prominently placed in brick and mortar bookstores. The books from Europa are simply elegant, and I love the french flaps. Gardam's previous book, Old Filth, which follows Sir Edward Feathers in old age as he reminisces about his youth, was one of my top reads of 2009. A younger Feathers is the protagonist of Gardam's newest.

Abraham Verghese's Cutting for Stone
I've heard this is excellent.

And just finished:

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
Miss Flavia de Luce, age 11, is one of the most endearing young heroines I've ever read. A terrifically fun read.
Four stars

Michael White's Beautiful Assassin
A fine (not great) read.

Two stars

I want to know what you think of Invisible. I'm a huge Auster fan, but I've held off on this one so far.

I started it this morning, Todd, so far so good! I'll let you know what the verdict is in a day or two.

four stars book on my list! I am currently wading through Spook. Not my favorite Roach indeed. If only it was about poop instead of spooks.
