pizza friday + links

Elise Joy's The Best is Yet to Come
It's Friday which means it is homemade pizza night at our house; the pizza dough is rising as I write this. Stella loves "Pizza Friday" as she gets to help assemble the pizzas, meaning she usually eats more pieces of cheese and olives than actually make it on her pizza. Tonight I'm making a pizza bianco (without the Parmesan) for myself with prosciutto, and arugula from our garden. Yum.

Happy weekend, lovelies.

a few friday links

Manhattan Dolls
The Manhattan Dolls
My sister got married on Monday! To help the newlyweds celebrate we surprised them with a "singing telegram" of sorts. Three Manhattan Dolls showed up to their apartment on Monday night and serenaded them with My Funny Valentine, Fly Me to the Moon, Apple Blossom Time, and Blue Skies. Sweet, right?

This Barbara Ehrenreich interview on Fresh Air about her new book, Living with a Wild God: A Nonbeliever's Search for the Truth about Everything, was interesting: "The religions that fascinate me and could possibly tempt me are not the ones that involve faith or belief. They're the ones that offer you the opportunity to know the spirit or deity. ... I think most readily of West-African-derived religions which involve ecstatic rituals where people actually apprehend the spirit or the God or whatever that they are invoking and that they are trying to contact — I have respect for that. But don't ask me to believe anything."

I'm feeling the need for a change and have been coveting this hair/cut for awhile now. To perm or not to perm. I can't believe I'm even writing that...

These honey mustard roasted chicken thighs are so easy and delicious. I've been eating tons of greens of late; I've got my eye of some of these main-dish salads.

Happy Friday!

happy friday links

Sheeps by Meagan Donegan

I can't wait to read the new Donna Tartt.

Cookies! Shayna texted me about these yesterday and Stella and I promptly set to work making them.  We put in half the curry recommended but added cardamom and chocolate chips as we didn't have shredded coconut. They're so good!

On the topic of cookies... How Oreos Work Like Cocaine.

Are you watching the new season of Homeland? I'm continually impressed by how the creators of this show make each character's point of view so very believable. And the acting!

broadchurch

I'm always on the lookout for good BBC dramas and last week I found Broadchurch. We blazed through the 8-episode series in less than a week. It's a beautifully executed murder mystery set in a small town on the coast of Britain. And I mean beautiful. Some of the visual sequences were absolutely stunning... Watch it for that reason alone.

a few midweek links

Walloon Lake, Michigan
My dear friend Melissa created an super awesome meal planning app called 5 Plates! The app delivers 5 dinner recipes every week with a grocery list. How easy is that? It debuted on iTunes today so go get it.

We went to Michigan at the end of August. My sister-in-law Mary wrote about the trip and posted some pictures on her lovely blog. I also posted some photos from our trip on Instagram.

I only read one book while in Michigan. But I've just started this based on a rave review from Jordan. Also on my nightstand: Wild, The Happiest Toddler on the Block (yep), and The Cuckoos Calling.

A few months ago I started using this light foundation on my face. It's a bit on the pricey side, but totally worth it.

We finally finished watching the first season of this show. Loved it! I'm going through serious withdrawals... Thank goodness there are three new episodes of Foyle's War airing soon.

a few friday links

Our plum tree is producing more fruit than we can manage to eat, so this week I made this super tasty plum tart. I used half whole wheat flour for the crust and very little of the topping. We devoured it with a scoop of Jeni's Goat Cheese with Red Cherries Ice Cream. Absolutely delicious!!

We are recommending this book left and right (so good!), and I'm currently in the reading this book, both of which made it onto NPR's Best of Summer: 6 Books that the Critics Adore.

Hurray for new episodes of Endeavour.

I can't wait for my feet to go back to size so I can finally (I got them in MAY) fit into my *new* clogs.

The Rapper is Present: Marina Abramović + Jay-Z.

house of cards

We've been obsessively watching House of Cards, the Netflix original series staring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright who play the devilishly conniving political couple Frank and Claire Underwood. Based on the BBC 4-part series of the same name, the Netflix series boasts David Fincher as the executive producer of the show and director of the first two episodes. It's compelling and so uncomfortable to watch, brilliantly acted, evenly paced, and a nail-biter of a drama. I give it high marks...

25 things you didn't know about mad men

I'm still thinking about the 25 Things You Didn't Know About Mad Men after reading through the list last Friday. Did you know that 7 out of 9 writers on the show are women? Yep.
Did you know that Glen is played by Matthew Weiner's real-life son? It's the truth. If you're as big a Mad Men fan as I am you'll be fascinated by the list too...

all i need is some sunshine

Every time I listen to this Timber Timbre song (hat tip, Andie) I think of the extreme hotness that is Eric Northman.
Yay for the June return of True Blood.

zou bisou bisou

I received an email from my friend Aralena this morning that confirmed that I'm not the only one singing zou bisou bisou over and over and over ever since watching the season 5 premiere of Mad Men. I don't know about you, but I loved it. Hot damn. Zou bisou bisou!
