oh, kevin drew

Kevin Drew + Feist + Zach Galifianakis = awesomeness

Chris DeVille of Stereogum:
For a certain sort of indie-rock fan — specifically people who were in college when Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People came out, people like me — the sight of Kevin Drew and Leslie Feist playfully singing together in an empty ballroom is enough to make your entire week. Funny Or Die’s video for Drew’s Darlings jam “You In Your Were” delivers on the front while weaving in a comedic storyline about Zach Galifianakis choreographing a dance routine to help Drew have a hit on par with “The Macarena” and “Gangnam Style.” That whole ordeal is pretty funny, and when Feist shows up, her chemistry with Drew elicits some serious tingles. In other words, the video is overflowing with positive emotions. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

life is a glorious thing + friday links

It has been an emotional week. Last Friday night a friend's husband died unexpectedly. There are no words to describe the immeasurable loss and subsequent outpouring of love that we have witnessed for her and their young son and their family over the past seven days. His death has made me pause often, tell those around me that I love them, and hold tightly onto my family and friends.

Life is a fragile, precious, glorious thing. It is good to be reminded.

Happy weekend.

I love Sophie Calle. Forever.

The perfect weekend bag.

I am usually one to roll my eyes and make fake gagging sounds at food restrictions, but now that I've gone dairy, nut, and tomato free for Djuna's sake I'm actually considering buying this cookbook. Crazy? Maybe.

I found my perfect jumpsuit. (thanks for the treat, Mom!)

Though I am, and always have been, a morning person, the upside of being a night owl.

all is possible

Oh, hey there.

After reading this blog post about the death of the blog back in December, I took stock. Did I enjoy blogging? Sometimes. Do people read/enjoy my blog? Yes, a few. Do I have time to commit to writing and curating in this way? Sometimes; though most of my internet activity happens on my phone and most typing is done with one hand while nursing...which is why Instagram is so satisfying these days. As my posts were getting less and less frequent, I figured a full break from the blog might be in order. And it was so easy to just stop.

Then on Friday night Jordan sat down at the dinner table and said "I need to have a serious talk with you." My heart dropped. "About your blog," he continued. I laughed. Oh, blog... He then proceeded to guilt encourage me to start writing again. For myself. For our girls. As a testament to this life we live together. I listened. So here I am.

Spring has arrived in Oakland, and with it the possibility of a new season. In the spirit of spring, I'm sharing Dvořák's Quartet #12 (the American String Quartet), which I heard on the radio this morning, and which has always filled me a happy wonder and sense that all is possible.

silly love songs

This song has been on repeat in my head for almost a week now, ever since I heard it playing at one of my local coffee shops. Here's to a love-filled Monday.

It's a summery day here in Oakland, a good day for a little Shuggie Otis and driving with the windows down...

the milk carton kids

I grew up playing cello and as a teenager I would often go stay with a family of cellists (the mother and her 3 sons all took lessons) in LA. The eldest son and I went to chamber music camp (nerdy, yes) together at Occidental one summer, and we would all play gigs (a party here, a wedding there) together from time to time.
I remember the year the middle son, Ken, started playing the guitar. From the beginning, he was a natural. He now makes up half of the talented duo The Milk Carton Kids. Their new album The Ash & Clay was just released at the end of March. Here they are playing "Honey, Honey" on Conan (Ken is the one on the right):

Love this upbeat [albeit a little creepy...the eyes, they freak me out a little] Bonnie 'Prince' Billy video.

on repeat: passion pit

Jason Nocito/Courtesy of the artist
Gossamer, the new album from Passion Pit, is streaming right now on NPR. It's all summery fun-time road-trip awesomeness.
Gossamer vacillates like a torrid romance: Every moment is touch and go, on and off, quiet as a whisper and then loud as a yell. Angelakos' lyrics suggest a love life filled with ups and downs. "Cry Like a Ghost," for example, finds him remembering a relationship trapped in a vicious cycle: "Sylvia / Right back where you came from you're a pendulum / Heartbroken and numb." But he doesn't wallow in the sadness: Gossamer is pure catharsis. It's all about strength, moving forward, forgetting — and giving life to the party even as it doles out condolences to the lonely. -- Austin Cooper

Wow, now this is an awesome wedding video. I used to work with the groom Greg at Chronicle Books. He and his lady have some mad style... And I love the Beach House. Enjoy!

heaven or las vegas

Happy June, y'all!

The sun is shining, and this song is echoing around in our house reminding me of all the mornings I listened to Cocteau Twins' Heaven or Las Vegas while getting dressed for high school. I forgot how much I love/d this album.

all i need is some sunshine

Every time I listen to this Timber Timbre song (hat tip, Andie) I think of the extreme hotness that is Eric Northman.
Yay for the June return of True Blood.

zou bisou bisou

I received an email from my friend Aralena this morning that confirmed that I'm not the only one singing zou bisou bisou over and over and over ever since watching the season 5 premiere of Mad Men. I don't know about you, but I loved it. Hot damn. Zou bisou bisou!
